Prent Awards Packaging Scholarships

JANESVILLE, WI—September 23, 2008—Prent Corporation, the global leader of custom medical thermoform packaging, awarded nearly $14,000 in scholarships last week to two Package Engineering majors at the University of Wisconsin-Stout.

They are Karissa Brummond from Mayville, WI and Joe Bons of Little Chute, WI. Each received a $6,800 scholarship.

Both are seniors attending the renowned College of Technology, Engineering and Management at the University of Wisconsin-Stout. The university is Wisconsin’s Polytechnic University and the first recipient of a Malcolm Baldridge National Quality Award in higher education.

Prent: Long History of Academic Support
Over the years, Prent Corporation has awarded more than $500,000 to students and universities to advance the study of packaging, thermoforming and engineering.

Prent President and CEO Joe Pregont—himself a graduate of UW-Stout’s packaging program—is a firm believer in helping train the next generation of packaging professionals. “Whether it’s awarding student scholarships, assisting student packaging organizations, advancing the scholarship programs of our trade associations or helping universities develop or expand packaging programs, it’s critical we support students and academic centers of excellence to ensure the best and brightest consider packaging as a career path,” says Pregont.

Joseph Bons: Sustainable Packaging
Winning a Prent Scholarship is having a tremendous impact on Joe Bons and his family. “When I told my mother she started crying,” reports Bons. “It will help relieve the stress that college expenses have put on my parents and me. I’ve funded 85% of my tuition and my parents have helped where they could. The Prent Scholarship is not only an honor, but will help me more than anyone could imagine.”

Bons, who has held various packaging internships and summer positions, wants to focus on sustainable packaging to reduce waste in the environment. “I want to be involved with packaging cost analysis and find ways to reduce packaging, while still providing the same amount of protection,” he explains.

Active in school activities, Bons is a member of the university’s IoPP chapter, the varsity track and field team and is an intramural sports supervisor and referee. He also enjoys hunting, fly-fishing and football.

Brummond: Package Design & Development
Brummond is also proud to be a recipient of a Prent Scholarship. “It will allow me more time and energy to devote to school,” she says. “It helps assure me that my hard work over the past four years has paid off.”

Brummond’s interest in packaging was sparked when she took a summer job at a corrugate manufacturer. “I was amazed at what I was exposed to and began to research packaging as a major and career,” she explains. “The thing I love most about packaging is the wide variety of opportunities available.” Since that first summer job, Brummond has worked at four other packaging companies.
As for the future, Brummond says she’s “torn between consumer packaging and food packaging. I want to do packaging development and design. I’m also very interested in innovative packaging technologies.”

Brummond enjoys spending time with her family and friends, as well as camping, running, rollerblading, hunting, skiing and snowmobiling.
